Celebrating Mary’s first book Costa Rican style

On February 16, 2017, Olo Alaia Surf & Brew in Nosara, Costa Rica, transformed into a hub of celebration, community, and literary delight for the launch of Mary Smathers’ book, Fertile Soil. About 60 friends, neighbors, and visitors gathered to mark the occasion in true Nosara style.

The evening was filled with laughter, connection, and a shared love for storytelling. Guests ranging in age from 5 to 90 enjoyed an inspiring event featuring excerpts from Fertile Soil, Mary’s reflections on the book’s creation, and the vibrant atmosphere of Olo Alaia—a unique blend of surf shop, craft beer bar, and coffee haven.

With delicious treats in hand and the finest craft beer in Nosara flowing, attendees mingled, shared stories, and celebrated Mary’s work. The event was more than just a book launch; it was a testament to the power of community and the deep connections that make Nosara such a special place.
